Joburg Rhetoric v. Reality

Politicians in South Africa often employ leftist rhetoric to appeal to the country’s predominantly poor and black population. But in reality their policies cater to both rich and poor in ways that deprive the underserved inner city, according to Nokuzola Jenness ’10, who graduated from Brown’s Development Studies Program.

Her thesis, “Neoliberal Urbanism: Urban Regeneration in Inner-City Johannesburg,” describes how implementation of neoliberal macroeconomic policy in post-apartheid South Africa has influenced urban management in Johannesburg.

Among her findings: “They fail to recognize that there is a tremendous amount of human capital in the inner city which can be capitalized upon to promote growth by linking the community to wider processes.”
