PROVIDENCE, RI November 2, 2010
Today was the fifth day of the 2010 symposium, which means that things have been in full swing for more than a week now. Tonight was marked by a particular celebratory occasion: the first ever sponsors’ dinner during the Strait Talk symposium. The Strait Talk steering committee was delighted to host a sponsors’ banquet this year, giving an opportunity for delegates, organizers and members of various sponsoring groups to mingle. It was a unique chance for those who have offered support to the symposium to interact informally with the delegates whom their contributions have helped bring to the Brown campus. A full banquet of Chinese food, complete with drinks and dessert, was provided by the Asia Grille.
Unfortunately, ideas and passion alone are not always able to create the changes that peacemakers strive for. Without incredible generosity from many people and organizations, the 2010 Brown Strait Talk symposium could not occur. Support and donations have taken many forms, both throughout the history of Strait Talk and for this particular symposium. As well as incredibly generous monetary support, this symposium received has everything from in-kind donations of food from several companies to assistance with transportation of delegates and speakers. Strait Talk steering committee members have been laboring hard on many fronts for symposium since last semester, one of which has been garnering this kind of support.
Alina Kung '12, the symposium chair spoke to the attendees to thank them for attending and express the incredible gratitude that Strait Talk feels towards its supporters. Johnny Lin, a Brown alumni '08 and one of the original founders of Strait Talk, also spoke to highlight the mission of the organization and how Strait Talk has grown through the years. Sponsoring groups, such as the Chinese Student and Scholar Association, Office of International Affairs and the East Asian Studies Department sent representatives who introduced themselves. After these short remarks and introductions, sponsors, delegates and organizers alike enjoyed dinner and conversation about the progress of the symposium, Strait Talk and other topics.
