Hello everyone!

With my graduation from Brown only weeks behind me, I am thrilled to be heading off in early August to South Africa, where I will be interning with Grassroot Soccer for 12 months.  Grassroot Soccer (GRS) uses soccer to deliver an interactive “Skillz” curriculum to youth, providing them with the knowledge, skills, and support needed to protect themselves from HIV.  Since the organization’s founding in 2002, almost 400,000 youth have graduated from the GRS curriculum.  I look forward to sharing my experiences with you on this blog!

My internship with Grassroot Soccer offers me a unique post-graduation opportunity, combining my love for soccer with my growing interest in Sport for Development.  As a monitoring and evaluations intern in Soweto, outside of Johannesburg, I will be principally involved in helping to research the effectiveness of the Grassroot Soccer approach.  Our research will play an important role in informing the work of Grassroot Soccer, while also benefiting other organizations in the field of the Sport for Development.

Given that my position is voluntary, I have been asked by Grassroot Soccer to raise $10,000 to cover my expenses while in South Africa—expenses that include airfare, local transportation, food, medical needs, and other everyday items.  Grassroot Soccer will cover my housing.  I would greatly appreciate any support that you are able to provide!

You can donate to GRS through the Google Checkout “Donate Now” button on this page, and the funds will be used to directly support my work in South Africa.  You may also send a check made payable to Grassroot Soccer with “Katie Gannett’s Internship” in the memo to the Grassroot Soccer office at 198 Church Street, P.O. Box 712, Norwich, VT 05055.  All donations to Grassroot Soccer, a registered 501c3, are tax deductible to the extent provided by law (Federal Tax ID #: 43-1957920).  If you have any questions, please contact Tori Pinckney at

Thank you very much and I look forward to keeping you informed of my activities!
